Code compiling can be processor-intensive. Generally apps like browsers, word processors, mail clients, etc, don't create enough heat to trigger the fans to increase their speed. At their default speed they are nearly silent but they speed up to protect the components, becoming audible as sensors detect increasing internal temperatures. The fans are thermostatically controlled.
